hallway vignette

We’ve got a short hallway that leads from the kitchen to the half bathroom and our pantry. It’s a small space and I’ve been wanting to dress it up for a while now. With it being so small, it is hard to find anything to fit the space. This is also where the puppies stay during the day while I am at work or if we’re out. They are not fully potty trained yet, so for the sake of our floors and our sanity, we pen them when we’re gone. We have a baby gate that we put across the opening and we have a doggy door in the wall so they can go in and out to use the potty and to play outside. About 6 months ago I painted some tone-on-tone stripes, which I love. Then last week I found the perfect addition to the hallway.

We originally wanted this cabinet from ikea for our entry way, but decided the mirror would work better [which it has, by the way, we totally love it]. I was perusing craigslist one night last week and came across this cabinet. Perfect! It is very narrow and attaches to the wall with screws. I think we’ll probably paint it [of course], I’m just not sure what color. Probably white. We already had the round mirror, it was in our bedroom. It’s also from ikea [I think maybe I shop there too much? Does my house look like an ikea catalog? I hope not!]

One thing I love about the cabinet is that it hides the ugly dog door. From the kitchen, you can’t even see it. The closed door is the pantry and to the left is the half bathroom. The cabinet is designed to hold shoes, currently it’s empty. I’m not sure what we’ll store in it. I’m going to use this tutorial to make faux mercury glass with the three clear pieces on the cabinet.

I also made a little dog bed for Dodger and Foo. The tile is pretty cold in the winter, so now they’ve got a warm place to curl up and nap during the day. It’s just an extra pillow that we had and an old pillowcase. The pillowcase was actually a long body pillowcase, so I just measured and sewed it smaller, then cut the excess off. Super easy. Dog beds are either very ugly or expensive, so I love that this one cost us zero beans. My favorite price!

  1. I really love the thick, subtle stripes. The shoe shelf thing fits perfect in that spot. I can’t wait to see what color you paint it. The mirror is really pretty, it looks fancier than typical IKEA.

    • Yeah, I love the shelf – it is just perfect for that spot and the hallway looks so much nicer with it there. Not so plain. I didn’t realize until I started this whole blog thing – I shop at ikea quite a bit. I guess it’s just easiest and most affordable and most of their stuff really works for our small spaces, ya know? That mirror was only 30 bucks – but it looks like it was more. I love that!
